CO₂ Fire Extinguisher

In Czech, a CO₂ fire extinguisher is often called a “snow” extinguisher – its extinguishing agent is carbon dioxide.

What to use a CO₂ extinguisher on – and what not

It is designed for class B and C fires, i.e. flammable liquids and gases.

It is also excellent for electronic equipment, because it leaves no residue and therefore does not damage anything.

A CO₂ fire extinguisher is not suitable for solid materials, because there is a high risk of re-ignition.

How does it work?

The CO₂ displaces oxygen from the area of the fire, which smothers it. In addition, the gas cools as it expands when leaving the cylinder, so it also has a cooling effect.

What to watch out for

When using a CO₂ fire extinguisher, be careful: if the funnel-shaped horn at the end of the hose were lost, you could suffer frostbite. The horn protects you from the extremely low temperature created as the gas expands.

This extinguisher is also not suitable for small enclosed spaces, as it can dangerously increase the concentration of CO₂ in the room.

A CO₂ extinguisher is not very effective in places with strong air currents, which can carry the CO₂ away.

It must not be used on loose flammable materials and dust, where there is a risk of explosion and of the fire spreading, or on alkali metals.
