Pressure tests of fire extinguishers are a key part of fire protection for every company, institution and building. Carrying them out regularly ensures that fire extinguishers remain reliable and functional when needed. In 2026 the requirements in the Czech Republic are just as strict as in previous years – pressure tests are mandatory, and failing to carry them out or carrying them out incorrectly can lead to high fines and endanger the safety of people and property. At Rescue Group we specialise in comprehensive fire extinguisher servicing, including periodic pressure tests.
Why pressure tests of fire extinguishers are mandatory
Fire extinguishers are pressure vessels containing an extinguishing agent under high pressure. Over time, the pressure can drop, the cylinder can corrode or the agent can deteriorate due to ageing and operating conditions. That is why pressure tests are essential – their aim is to verify that the cylinder and the whole fire extinguisher still meet the safety and functional requirements laid down by law.
The legal basis for pressure testing in the Czech Republic is mainly Act No. 133/1985 Coll. on fire protection, Decree No. 34/2016 Coll. on the inspection, maintenance and repair of fire protection equipment and fire safety systems, and standard ČSN EN 3-7, which defines the characteristics, performance requirements and tests for fire extinguishers.
Without a valid pressure test, a fire extinguisher is considered non-compliant and using it is unlawful. Inspections by the Fire and Rescue Service and the State Fire Inspection focus precisely on whether fire extinguishers have been properly inspected and pressure tested at the prescribed intervals.
How often pressure tests must be carried out
The frequency of pressure tests depends on the type of fire extinguisher and the extinguishing agent:
- Water, foam and powder fire extinguishers – pressure test every 3 years
- CO₂ fire extinguishers – pressure test every 5 years
Pressure tests are carried out at the prescribed intervals and follow on from the regular annual inspections of fire extinguishers. An inspection must be carried out at least once a year. After each pressure test, a new seal with the date of the test is attached to the extinguisher.

How a fire extinguisher pressure test works
Pressure tests of fire extinguishers may only be carried out by an authorised person or company holding a valid licence. The whole process is precisely defined and includes the following steps.
First the fire extinguisher is dismantled and completely emptied of its agent. This is followed by a thorough visual check of the inside and outside of the cylinder, looking for signs of corrosion, deformation or cracks. Next comes the hydrostatic test, in which the cylinder is filled with water at the prescribed pressure, usually 1.5 times the working pressure. After the test, the cylinder is dried, refilled with the agent and reassembled, and a final check of the tightness and functionality of the whole extinguisher is carried out. Finally, a test report is issued and the extinguisher is marked with a new seal with the date of the test.
If a fire extinguisher fails the pressure test, it must be taken out of service immediately and replaced with a new or repaired unit.
Q&A: frequently asked questions about pressure tests
How often should pressure tests be carried out?
For most powder and foam extinguishers every 3 years, for CO₂ extinguishers every 5 years.
Who can carry out pressure tests?
Only an authorised company or person holding a valid licence issued by the Fire and Rescue Service of the Czech Republic.
What happens if a fire extinguisher fails the pressure test?
The extinguisher must be taken out of service immediately and replaced with a new or repaired unit.
Do pressure tests also apply to portable fire extinguishers?
Yes, the obligation applies to all fire extinguishers regardless of type and size.
How long does a pressure test take?
For ordinary extinguishers, 1–3 working days depending on the number of units and how busy the workshop is.

Pressure tests as part of responsible fire protection
Pressure tests of fire extinguishers are not just an administrative obligation. They are an important part of the fire protection system that determines whether an extinguisher will actually do its job when it is needed most. A regular, professionally performed test gives you confidence that the equipment remains reliable even after years of use.
